Planted Lavender Seed

Today I planted several packets of Lavender seed (Lavendula Vera). Lavender is a perennial herb except in very cold areas. Silvery plants with fragrant foliage and attractive lavender flowers are perfect in your perennial and herb garden.

Days to Germinate.................... 10 to 28 days
Planting Depth ........................ ⅛ inch
Plant Spacing.......................... 18 inches
Plant Height........................... 24 inches
Preserve By............................ Drying

Start seed indoors near a sunny window 6 weeks before transplanting to the garden. Or wow in garden in full sun when frost danger is over and ground is warm. Performs best in rows 2 feet apart.

Thin or transplant plants to 18 inches apart when they are 3 inches tall.

Cut flowers when they have just opened and the scent is the strongest. Dry on screen in shade. Excellent cut flower arrangements.

Lavender hates “wet feet” so make sure you plant it in well-drained soil with a lot of sand or organic material. A raised bed is an ideal place for lavender. Lavender is a lovely romantic addition to the flower garden.

Favorite Fragrance

The fresh pungence of lavender repels moths. Make some pretty sachets with inexpensive ladies handkerchiefs. Crochet or stitch around three edges, fill with dried lavender and stitch up the fourth side. Pretty gifts.

Local Color

Lavender is well-loved both as an ornamental plant and for it’s fragrance. Lavender oil is extracted commercially for perfumes. It’s a member of the Mint Family and native in the Mediterranean, North Africa, Atlantic Islands and India.
